AB Original first Indigenous act to win Australian Music prize

AB Original, the hip-hop duo of the rapper and actor Briggs and the producer Trials, has become the first Indigenous act to win the $30,000 Australian Music prize, beating shortlisted artists including Nick Cave and the Avalanches.

Briggs said the win, which they accepted at an event in Melbourne on Thursday night, was a “reflection of all the artists that came before us, who allowed us to be able to walk up tonight and win this”, listing Archie Roach, Kutcha Edwards and Ruby Hunter among others, “All these artists paved the way for artists like us to be able to achieve this. It’s because of them, they made the foundation. So I think that’s what us walking up tonight and accepting this thing is going to be about.”

Also shortlisted for this year’s award were DD Dumbo, Big Scary, Camp Cope, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Olympia and the Peep Tempel.

AB Original won the Australian Music prize for their debut album, Reclaim Australia, a title that plays on the name of the far-right group of so-called “patriots”, and is an album with a strong political narrative. Briggs said: “Our record hasn’t been done before, from this point of view at this level. So I guess this [win] reflects that too.”

The Reclaim Australia album included the single January 26, a song challenging Oz to change the date of Australia Day. Last year, as Triple J faced pressure to move its Hottest 100 broadcast to a more inclusive day, a Facebook campaign encouraged listeners to vote for the song in solidarity with the protesters. The song ended up in the top 20 of the countdown.

When asked if their placing in the Hottest 100 felt like a political or artistic achievement, Trials said it was both: “You can’t really have one without the other. We could have obviously talked all that shit without having a kick-arse song.” Briggs said: “Third layer – it was also an ironic achievement.” whilst Trials added: “January 26 ended up being the main song that set all this off but hopefully people discovered the other messages in there too. Its [success] is a reflection of the time right now.”

Dave Faulkner, the chairman of the judging panel and a member of the Hoodoo Gurus, said: “Reclaim Australia is more than just a great Australian album, it’s a cultural landmark … It hits hard politically, musically and emotionally and the stories AB Original are telling are ones we all need to hear right now.”

The final comments are with Briggs and Trials who have yet to decide on what they would be spending the money on but a second album isn’t off the table: “We’re independent artists man, it costs us to make records – that’s where this is going,” Briggs said. “If we had some reach and pissed some people off with this record, you wait till we have $30,000 for the next one.”

Triple J will continue playing 2017 Hottest 100 on Australia Day

Australian youth broadcaster Triple J has announced the Hottest 100 will be broadcast on Australia Day in 2017, after an unsuccessful campaign to have the date of its annual listener poll moved to show solidarity with Indigenous Australia.triple j hottest 100 logo

In a statement issued on Tuesday afternoon, the station confirmed the broadcast event would still be held on 26 January in 2017: “Future years are under review, and we’ll continue to talk to Indigenous communities, artists and our audience about this.”

Australia Day marks the anniversary of the arrival of the British in Sydney in 1788, and is seen by many in the Indigenous community and beyond as an occasion that celebrates invasion.

On Tuesday morning, youth site Pedestrian revealed Triple J was considering changing the date of the Hottest 100 broadcast, citing “multiple well-placed sources” being involved in consultations in recent weeks, and an all-staff meeting in which staffers voiced “conflicting viewpoints”.australia-day-logo2

Triple J did not go into detail as to why it decided to retain the Australia Day date, but confirmed the Hottest 100’s continued partnership with the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience (AIME): “By working with AIME, Triple J hopes to use this wide-reaching platform to create a meaningful connection between all communities, including Indigenous Australians.” Last year Triple J raised more than $100,000 for the mentoring program.

AIME’s founder and CEO Jack Manning Bancroft commented: “Australia Day represents pain and mourning for many Australians, including our first Australians. It also represents immense pride for many Aussies, reflecting on how far we’ve come.”

In August, Triple J launched January 26, a new single by AB Original, a collaboration between Indigenous hip-hop artists Briggs and Trials featuring Indigenous singer Dan Sultan, in which the three argued for the date to be changed. Briggs_(rapper)In a statement issued at the time of release they said: “January 26 [the song] represents the annual frustration many Indigenous Australians feel from the farce of a holiday,” they said at the time.

Speaking with Music Feeds last week, Briggs said moving the date of the Hottest 100 is “definitely a conversation worth having … with Triple J” and that moving the date “would be the right thing to do”.

On Tuesday the pair released a statement in response to the campaign to change the date of the Hottest 100: “AB Original appreciate the solidarity and leadership shown from both Triple J and other artists. We look forward to a day that we can celebrate, wholeheartedly, the great music industry event with our peers and punters alike.”

Sydney band the Presets lobby for Australia Day to be moved

A Facebook post by the Australian band Presets calling Australia Day on the 26th January the “cruelest of anniversaries, has gone viral.

Sydney band the Presets have suggested alternative dates for Australia Day, including the birthdays of presetswriter Henry Lawson or Indigenous activist Eddie Mabo. The post has been “liked” 20,700 times and shared by more than 3,300 Facebook users.

On their Facebook page the Presets have pointed out that the 26th January inappropriately celebrates the anniversary of the British settlement of Australia, when “a white man arrived with his guns, his alcohol, his church, his flus and other unknown illnesses. Out of all the days of the year that we could possibly choose to celebrate this wonderful nation of Australia, we think it’s frankly sickening that we continue to celebrate on this cruelest of anniversaries, January 26.”

The Aria award-winning electronic music duo, Julian Hamilton and Kim Moyes, said they looked forward to a time australia-day-logo2when “a new day is chosen to celebrate our great nation – a day that we can all truly get behind”.
