Peter Garrett of Midnight Oil attacks former Prime Minister Paul Keating

Midnight Oil frontman Peter Garrett attacked former Labor Prime Minister Paul Keating who suggested the Australian band should not be playing gigs at the Domain park in Sydney’s CBD.

Paul Keating on Saturday asked how Peter Garrett could “feel in any way comfortable squatting and profiting from Sydney’s central piece of public land” which has been fenced off for about a fortnight for two Midnight Oil gigs.

Peter Garrett, a former Labor minister in the Rudd and Gillard government, bit back on Saturday night at the first Sydney show, saying: “Welcome to the Domain – the place where the people listen to real music.”

Peter Garrett pointed out the Domain was the “Australian people’s place”, continuing “This is where you want to be,” he told the crowd while acknowledging the traditional Indigenous owners of the land. Paul Keating had earlier told Fairfax Media the Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust “prostitutes its remit by alienating central public recreational lands to commercial purposes”.

The concert on Saturday, which comes at the end of the band’s Great Circle world tour, saw guitarist and keyboard player Jim Moginie return to the stage just days after he tripped and tore a hamstring tendon from the bone at a show in Melbourne. Jim Moginie played seated with Garrett telling fans if he’d been a sportsman it would have been “a season-ending injury”. After the show he was taken off stage in a wheelchair.

Daryl Braithwaite to be inducted into Aria Hall of Fame

Daryl Braithwaite, singer of perennial karaoke favourite The Horses, is the latest Australian musician and performer to be inducted into the Aria Hall of Fame.

The Aria Hall of Fame honour comes 45 years into Daryl Braithwaite’s career, which began in the 1970s with the band Sherbet, who had an international hit with “Howzat” in 1976.

The 68-year-old has since found success as a solo artist, including two multi-platinum albums, Edge and Rise.

It was Daryl Braithwaite’s version of the Rickie Lee Jones song “The Horses”, which appeared on Rise in 1991, that became his signature song. In 2015, a short-lived Change.org petition circulated to make the song Australia’s official national anthem and, at the Beyond the Valley festival in January 2016, 1980s revivalists Client Liaison brought Daryl Braithwaite on to the stage to perform the classic, in celebration of its 25th anniversary.

Daryl Braithwaite later said; “That was a thrill. I honestly didn’t know, will people know the song? Will people be accepting of me? I was coming into their domain, it wasn’t my area. That was most definitely a moment.”

Since then, Daryl Braithwaite has been added to this year’s Falls festival line-up, alongside artists such as Flume and Liam Gallagher.

Daryl Braithwaite performed the song with Jones herself during her Australian tour in April. He also recently sung it at Perth’s Beer Fest, where he discovered young fans who weren’t even born when his albums were released: “It was about 3,000 people and they were mainly in their 20s … It was quite staggering and it’s strange because I’ve been doing it for 40-odd years and it’s still as enjoyable now, if not more, than when I started out,” he said. “I can’t figure it out. All I know is that I love it. I love performing, I love people, doesn’t matter what age.”

Sherbet were inducted into the Aria Hall of Fame in 1990 and Daryl Braithwaite will now be rewarded again when he is acknowledged as a solo artist at next month’s Aria awards: “I feel very honoured to be inducted into the Aria hall Of fame, in an industry that I started out in because I was so passionate about it. It’s been a great journey and life through music.”

You can get a favourite song by Daryl Braithwaite as a framed vinyl single or a framed CD single – if it’s intended as a gift, you can personalise with an engraved plaque….ORDER HERE…..www.framedvinylrecords.com.au/

James Blunt announces Australia tour

James Blunt has announced he will tour Australia and New Zealand in 2018 and has indicated Ed Sheeran might join him on stage.

James Blunt is currently supporting Ed Sheeran on tour in the US ( playing second fiddle as “Sheeran’s bitch” ) and the pair will both be in Australia in March, with the strong possibility of an onstage collaboration.

James Blunt, who came to fame in 2005 with his pervasive hit You’re Beautiful, recently released his fifth album The Afterlove which includes a song co-written with Ed Sheeran called Make Me Better.

James Blunt will be headlining his own tour across Australia and New Zealand, including some A Day On The Green shows in wineries and gardens. However he has no qualms being on his present tour as Ed Sheeran’s support, stating: “I think my ambition has always been to be Ed Sheeran’s bitch and it’s a job I really love,” he said. “I can’t tell you how awesome this gig is. I play for 40 minutes before him, that means I’m off stage two hours before him, that means I’ve two hours extra drinking time ahead of him and he’s playing catch-up.”

James Blunt, who is known as much for his sarcastic humour (which he displays regularly via his Twitter account – if you are not a follower, become one as his tweets are hilarious!! ) as he is for his love songs, has enjoyed testing out his recent album on Ed Sheeran’s fans.

Blunt commented: “I have no pressure, I’m playing to his audience and they don’t know what to expect and I’ve got nothing to lose except win them over and it’s been such fun. It’s also been a great place to try out new songs and practise new songs so that by the time I get down to the important place of Australia I know what I’m doing.”

James Blunt will perform in New Zealand from 6th March 2018 and in Australia from 10th March 2018.

Tragedy as Bluesfest now loses Bee Gees’ Barry Gibb

Barry Gibb has cancelled his tour of Australia, including his Monday-night headline slot at the Bluesfest in Byron Bay .

Touring company Live Nation said the former member of the Bee Gees’s tour would not go ahead “due to a change in international commitments”. Live Nation also said it was “currently not possible” to reschedule the performances, so full refunds would be available to ticket holders for the shows.

However, the Barry Gibb cancellation comes on the back of the recent withdrawal of Neil Young from next year’s Bluesfest, along with the rest of his Australian tour.barry_gibb

Barry Gibb, who grew up in Australia with his brothers Maurice and Robin, is the last surviving member of the Bee Gees. He recently released In The Now, his first solo album in 32 years, written with his sons Stephen and Ashley.

Kylie Minogue says she will not marry in Australia

Kylie Minogue and her British fiance would love to get married in Australia, but will not do so until marriage equality is recognised.

The pair want to get married in Melbourne, says Kylie Minogue’s partner, UK actor Joshua Sasse. “There are chances of a Melbourne wedding … [but] we will not get married until this law has passed in Australia,” Sasse told Network kylie-minogue-joshua-sasseSeven from Vancouver recently.

The Turnbull government has proposed a plebiscite on marriage equality. The Australian actress Margot Robbie endorsed the campaign by wearing a T-shirt on the US’s Saturday Night Live at the weekend.

Kylie Minogue is on record as stating how “backward” Australia is about marriage equality, saying “the Earth didn’t cave in” in other countries where it is legal and that “love is love”.

Crowded House to play two gigs at crowded Sydney Opera House

Crowded House will play two concerts on the Sydney Opera House forecourt, 20 years after their famous farewell concert which was watched by 100,000 fans at the same location.

The November concerts will come in the same week that Crowded House, the Australian/New Zealand band, will be crowded-houseinducted into the Aria Hall of Fame at the Aria Awards.

In 1996 Crowded House performed their Farewell to the World concert to more than 100,000 people on the steps of the Sydney Opera House, an event which was delayed a day because of the rain.

Founding Crowded House band member Nick Seymour commented: “I am excited to announce two encore performances on the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House. The shows will mark the 20th anniversary of our break-up concert. ‘Proper order!’ I say, as being at the top of our game, I didn’t want to break up in the first place! I’ve come to realise the ‘top of our game’ is whenever we get together so please join us for a fuck-off sing-song, an off-piste jam session, a toast to absent friends and NO RAIN.”

Up-and-coming artist Kirin J Callinan will open for the group at the special gig. The celebrations also coincide with the re-issue of Crowded House’s six studio albums – Crowded House, Temple Of Low Men, Woodface, Together Alone, Time on Earth, Intriguer – and 1999’s rarities album Afterglow, as deluxe editions.

Neil Finn commented: “We are thrilled all seven of our albums are about to be reissued in all formats including vinyl, each one accompanied by a rich trove of rarities including writing demos and other unreleased musical curiosities, as well as new original artwork from my dear friend Nick Seymour.”

He added: “This has been many years in the making with much of the exhaustive listening, editing and remixing being done by the keeper of knowledge Jeremy Ansell in Auckland. It has been a labour of love for us and our mission all along was making a superlative quality, definitive document of Crowded House’s unique history for all the fans who have given us their affection over the years.”

AC/DC lose yet another band member

AC/DC bass guitarist Cliff Williams has announced his departure from the band, saying he feels in his gut that “it’s the right thing” to do.

Cliff Williams informed Gulfshore Life  magazine: “It’s been what I’ve known for the past 40 years, but after this tour I’m backing off of touring and recording. Losing Malcolm, the thing with Phil and now with Brian, it’s a changed ACDCanimal. I feel in my gut it’s the right thing.”

Things have been falling apart for AC/DC for several years with Malcolm Young, the co-founder and rhythm guitarist, retiring from the band in 2014, due to suffering dementia. Former drummer Phil Rudd has run into trouble with the law in recent years, becoming estranged from the band in 2015, following charges of drug possession and threatening to kill.

And then in March 2016, Brian Johnson was forced by doctors to quit touring with the band immediately or risk “total hearing loss”.

How AC/DC  manifest themselves in the future remains to be seen……
