Marriage proposal on stage at Adele Melbourne gig

After a fan had a cardiac arrest at her Sydney gig last week, Adele facilitated a more pleasant heart stopping moment with a marriage proposal on stage in Melbourne.

Wade Nicholson-Doyle took his boyfriend, Chris, to the Melbourne Adele gig as a 40th birthday present. When Adele called the couple from the crowd onto the stage, Mr Nicholson-Doyle dropped to one knee and proposed. A loud cheer went up from the 77,000 fans in the stadium.

“Did you say yes?” Adele joked, before embracing the couple. She continued: “I actually had no idea that was going to happen. Congratulations.”

Wade Nicholson-Doyle said he was momentarily unaware of the screaming crowd. He commented: “It just kind of blacked out and all I could see was Chris and Adele standing there. To share the stage with her, if only for five minutes, is really incredible. We’re very much in her debt.”

Same-sex marriage is not legal in Australia. A proposal for a vote on the issue was blocked in parliament last year.

Despite this Wade Nicholson-Doyle said they would hold a celebration with friends and family in Australia, adding: “We’ve made no plans yet. I think Chris’s head is still spinning at the moment.”

It was only last week that Adele confirmed to Australian concert goers that she too was married.

Adele stops Sydney gig as fan suffers cardiac arrest

Adele was had to temporarily suspend a concert in Sydney after a fan suffered a cardiac arrest.

Footage of Friday night’s concert at the ANZ Stadium in Sydney filmed by fans shows Adele becoming concerned when medics arrived to attend to a woman in the audience. She can be heard asking the band to stop, saying: “I’m sorry, there’s fireworks in this one and I don’t want to scare them. Is it OK to carry on? OK. Sorry, someone got hurt. I’m really sorry.”

The 47-year-old woman was taken to hospital and was confirmed to have suffered a cardiac arrest. Concertgoer Daniel Lowe told Australia’s 9 News: “Security staff were trying to rouse her because they assumed she fainted. It took a full song for the actual on-site medics to respond. They then started performing chest compressions for a good 15 to 20 minutes until ambulance officers arrived with proper equipment.” Daniel Lowe added that Adele was “visibly upset for the rest of the show. She wasn’t as perky and smiley as she was as before.”

Another fan, Meg Rylance, told Daily Mail Australia that she was sitting near the woman who collapsed. She said: “Adele stopped the concert. She actually seemed really tearful.”

AB Original first Indigenous act to win Australian Music prize

AB Original, the hip-hop duo of the rapper and actor Briggs and the producer Trials, has become the first Indigenous act to win the $30,000 Australian Music prize, beating shortlisted artists including Nick Cave and the Avalanches.

Briggs said the win, which they accepted at an event in Melbourne on Thursday night, was a “reflection of all the artists that came before us, who allowed us to be able to walk up tonight and win this”, listing Archie Roach, Kutcha Edwards and Ruby Hunter among others, “All these artists paved the way for artists like us to be able to achieve this. It’s because of them, they made the foundation. So I think that’s what us walking up tonight and accepting this thing is going to be about.”

Also shortlisted for this year’s award were DD Dumbo, Big Scary, Camp Cope, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Olympia and the Peep Tempel.

AB Original won the Australian Music prize for their debut album, Reclaim Australia, a title that plays on the name of the far-right group of so-called “patriots”, and is an album with a strong political narrative. Briggs said: “Our record hasn’t been done before, from this point of view at this level. So I guess this [win] reflects that too.”

The Reclaim Australia album included the single January 26, a song challenging Oz to change the date of Australia Day. Last year, as Triple J faced pressure to move its Hottest 100 broadcast to a more inclusive day, a Facebook campaign encouraged listeners to vote for the song in solidarity with the protesters. The song ended up in the top 20 of the countdown.

When asked if their placing in the Hottest 100 felt like a political or artistic achievement, Trials said it was both: “You can’t really have one without the other. We could have obviously talked all that shit without having a kick-arse song.” Briggs said: “Third layer – it was also an ironic achievement.” whilst Trials added: “January 26 ended up being the main song that set all this off but hopefully people discovered the other messages in there too. Its [success] is a reflection of the time right now.”

Dave Faulkner, the chairman of the judging panel and a member of the Hoodoo Gurus, said: “Reclaim Australia is more than just a great Australian album, it’s a cultural landmark … It hits hard politically, musically and emotionally and the stories AB Original are telling are ones we all need to hear right now.”

The final comments are with Briggs and Trials who have yet to decide on what they would be spending the money on but a second album isn’t off the table: “We’re independent artists man, it costs us to make records – that’s where this is going,” Briggs said. “If we had some reach and pissed some people off with this record, you wait till we have $30,000 for the next one.”

Celebrate your love of Briggs and Trials and AB Original by getting January 26 as a framed vinyl single or a framed CD single. Alternatively you can have Reclaim Australia as a framed CD album. Midnight Oil announce details of world tour

Australian rock band Midnight Oil have announced their first world tour in over 15 years, and their biggest world tour since the early 1990s, which will open with a pub gig in Sydney.

Midnight Oil disbanded in 2002, but have played several one-off shows since 2009. The Midnight Oil tour will begin in April with a pub gig in Sydney, before moving to Brazil, the US, Canada, Europe and New Zealand. It will then return to Australia in October and November, closing at Sydney’s The Domain on 11 November.

The full Midnight Oil tour was announced at a press event on a rocky boat anchored on Sydney Harbour. Invited members of the press were joined by the lead singer Peter Garrett, who retired from politics in 2013, supported by guitarist, keyboardist and songwriter Jim Moginie, guitarist Martin Rotsey, bassist Bones Hillman and drummer Rob Hirst.

At the press conference Midnight Oil also announced the release of three box sets: a complete vinyl collection, the Full Tank CD collection (including all their existing albums and EPs), and the Overflow Tank, which will include 14 hours of unreleased and rare material across four CDs and 8 DVDs.

Guns N’ Roses shoot themselves through the foot in Oz

When the Guns N’ Roses announcer shouted “Hello Sydney” just before the band walked on stage in Melbourne, they were not surprisingly met with a chorus of boos.

However Guns N’ Roses made up for it with an electrifying gig and a swiftly released apology on Twitter: “Melbourne! Accidentally after 30 years McBob made an error, we’re truly sorry. Thank you for coming out tonight!”

Luckily Guns N’ Roses guitar technician McBob, who has been introducing the band on stages around the world during their Not In This Lifetime tour, was quickly forgiven by fans in Melbourne for his momentary lapse of concentration. One follower replied to the post with: “One mistake every 30 years… Reasonable.” ( The Record Press author is pondering what exactly is a guitar technician? Is that what we used to call the roadie fella that tunes the guitar? )

In fairness Guns N’ Roses had just completed two nights in Sydney, so it seems to me that it’s perfectly reasonable that a combination of old age, senility and coach / jet lag from the 500 mile trip from Sydney to Melbourne quite naturally coalesced to create this classic scenario of disorientation and confusion!! Add drugs to the mix and Melbournites should count themselves lucky that Guns N’ Roses made it on stage at all!!

Anyway it simply adds spice to the long-running rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne!!

Let us know in the Reply Box below which city is better and why.

Bruce Springsteen attacks Donald Trump in Australia

Bruce Springsteen has once again lashed out at Donald Trump, this time criticising his immigration ban on Muslims during a gig in Australia.

Whilst introducing the song American Land at a show in Adelaide on 30th January, Bruce Springsteen commented: “Tonight we wanted to add our voices to the thousands of Americans who are protesting in airports around ourbruce-springsteen-born-to-run-album country the Muslim ban and detention of foreign nationals and refugees. America is a nation of immigrants, and we find this anti-democratic and fundamentally un-American.”

Bruce Springsteen was joined in his condemnation of the announced temporary US travel ban by other musicians, including Rihanna, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong and John Legend. Most notable, perhaps, was Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme who took to Instagram to label Trump a “shallow, inept, multi-bankrupt declaring, narcissistic, narrow-minded, out of touch, objectifying, barf-inducing, fascist, clown penis … who also happens to be re-stup-redicu-lame”.

Tragedy as Bluesfest now loses Bee Gees’ Barry Gibb

Barry Gibb has cancelled his tour of Australia, including his Monday-night headline slot at the Bluesfest in Byron Bay .

Touring company Live Nation said the former member of the Bee Gees’s tour would not go ahead “due to a change in international commitments”. Live Nation also said it was “currently not possible” to reschedule the performances, so full refunds would be available to ticket holders for the shows.

However, the Barry Gibb cancellation comes on the back of the recent withdrawal of Neil Young from next year’s Bluesfest, along with the rest of his Australian tour.barry_gibb

Barry Gibb, who grew up in Australia with his brothers Maurice and Robin, is the last surviving member of the Bee Gees. He recently released In The Now, his first solo album in 32 years, written with his sons Stephen and Ashley.

Tickets bought for the Barry Gibb solo shows will be refunded in full to all credit and debit card holders and Ticketek will contact all those who bought tickets to advise how to process their refund.

As a consolation you can get a favourite Bee Gees song as a framed vinyl single or a framed CD single. If it’s intended as a gift, you can personalise with an engraved plaque…… ORDER HERE…….. www.framedvinylrecords.com.au/

Splendour in the Grass and Falls festival bought by Live Nation

The multinational entertainment group Live Nation has taken over Splendour in the Grass and Falls festival, two of Australia’s biggest annual music events.

The Australian reported on Monday that the Los Angeles-based company had acquired a 51% stake in Secret Sounds Group, which owns, organises and produces Splendour in the Grass and Falls festival.splendour-in-the-grass-logo

Live Nation has a portfolio of more than 80 festivals around the world, including Lollapalooza, the Governors Ball on Randall’s Island in New York City and Bonnaroo in Tennessee. It has an Australian arm in Melbourne.

Jessica Ducrou and Paul Piticco, joint chief executives of Secret Sounds, said in a statement that Live Nation would help them take live music in Australia “to the next level”. The acquisition by Live Nation includes Secret Sounds’ touring, sponsorship, PR, artist management and domestic agency businesses, but does not affect Secret Sounds publishing and its record label affiliates Dew Process and Create Control.

Michael Rapino, the president and chief executive of Live Nation, said in a statement Falls festival and Splendour in the Grass “attract the biggest artists in the world but still feel uniquely Australian”. He commented: “We look forward to partnering with them to find new ways to grow our live event footprint across Australia.”falls-festival-logo-green

Live Nation acquired a controlling stake in C3 Presents, the American company that owned the Big Day Out, in 2014 but the festival folded shortly afterwards.

Splendour in the Grass is the largest contemporary music festival in Australia, and has been held annually since 2001, mostly in July in Byron Bay. Meanwhile Falls Festival is in its 24th year, with shows in Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales and Western Australia over the new year period, headlined by Childish Gambino and London Grammar. The events at Lorne, in Victoria, and Byron Bay, NSW, are already sold out.
